PROJECT 1:
summer course at HDK 2016
The project is aiming to create an experimental clothing collection.
The collection “be aware that the other person is you” is proposed to deal with the question of being or
feeling alone. Loneliness refers to a very personal feeling, but it is also a very visible issue in today’s society.
Especially in Sweden and the Scandinavian countries, the subject started to be more and more in public
discussion. I am wondering how we communicate a such individual and personal feeling and how we as individuals, but also as members of a society deal with it.
How do clothes respond, support or fight against the feeling of being alone?
What if, there would be clothing-items which make you feel comforted, stronger and prepared whatever
comes?
The work can be seen as a continuation/ development of my Bachelor collection “Mit euch”
which deals with the theme of friendship and geographical distance.
sketches
Different sketching methods as working with collages, sketching in the material (draping) and the more
traditional way of sketching will be part of my research and practice.

PROJECT 2:
MIT EUCH
The Mukkula Family
A special connection between special people, which by coincidence stepped in my life and got a place in my hart forever.
Marija
My work deals with the phenomena of friendship- especially the friendships I gained during my exchange in Finland.
Our group of seven people from different countries and cultures were put together with a large group of other Erasmus students. Quickly we weren’t only sharing similar experiences; we also gave each other the necessary support, becoming a substitute family away from home.
After the members of our clique went their separate ways, I didn’t feel alone. I grew with and through YOU.
To visualize the memories and experiences I had, I decided to create very personal pieces which were inspired and will be modeled by YOU.
In order to get the necessary material and inspiration I needed, 6 identical packages left Germany to different destinations. Each one held an instruction sheet, a questionnaire and a piece of white cotton fabric. YOU created and designed the fabric the way you wanted- that was the game plan.
Five packages, as individualas their senders, returned to Germany. Packages filled with small personal items, stories, favourite clothing items and even some pieces that I was permitted to use as I pleased.
As I draped the fabric and clothing, I asked myself how I can incorporate the finished items into a new project and make them work with a new context. I draped the clothing in a suitable yet unfamiliar manner; to visualize the way we felt returning to our homes after we had begun to feel at home somewhere else.
Another idea I tried was (partially) separating and re-assembling the items of clothing.
This aspect reflects the patchwork-essence of our friendship. After one semester, our small group of friends had to part. Everyone gained personal impressions and ideas and brought them into a new environment.
Distance influenced our relationships towards one another- some got weaker, others stronger and more itense. This is shown in my work.
The received fabric will be used to finish hidden patterns. Therefore the person wearing the clothing items of this collection is neveralone; they are WITH YOU.
Because our friendship started and grew in Finland, I wanted my collection to express the Finnish ambience. The clear, clam Finnish culture which we were confronted by on a daily basis is, together with friendship, another main component of my work. As part of this design process I changed the exciting drapings in a structured form, without losing their individual meanings and statements.
The Finnish forest particularly inspired fabric development and surface design. The friendly, mystical and secure summer atmosphere transformed into a cold, distant winter.
I brought the colourful and positive impressions of summer by using knitting wool. The clear-cut lines of the winter forests were inspirations for the surface design. All of the different climates WE experienced, literally and metaphorically, compelled me to use interesting material and techniques.
Outdoor adventures and cozy get-togethers? -WITH YOU, no problem.
